About Us

The Southern PEACE III Partnership is comprised of a Joint Committee of 16 elected representatives – 4 from each of the four council areas – and 8 social partners – 2 from each of the four council areas.

Newry and Mourne District Council is the lead Council within the Cluster with responsibility for all financial and administrative matters.

Background PEACE III Programme

The EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation in Northern Ireland and the Border Region of Ireland (2007-2013) (hereinafter referred to as the PEACE III Programme) is a distinctive European Union Structural Funds Programme aimed at ‘reinforcing progress towards a peaceful and stable society and promoting reconciliation’. The PEACE III Programme has carried forward key aspects of the previous Peace Programmes (PEACE I and PEACE II) and will have a continued and renewed emphasis on reconciliation criteria and will specifically focus on reconciling communities and contributing towards a shared society.

Taking this overall aim forward, the PEACE III Programme will focus on two strategic objectives, these are:

  • Priority 1: Reconciling Communities
  • Priority 2: Contributing to a Shared Society

Under Priority 1, Reconciling Communities, there are two themes:

  • Theme 1.1 – Building Positive Relations at the Local Level
  • Theme 1.2 – Acknowledging and Dealing with the Past

Theme 1.1 Building Positive Relations at the Local Level aims ‘to challenge attitudes towards sectarianism and racism and support conflict resolution and mediation at the local community level.  The Priority also aims to establish meaningful cross-community and cross-border initiatives that will improve trust and tolerance, and reduce levels of sectarianism and racism’.

Theme 1.1 is being delivered through local authority led partnership arrangements.  For the Southern Cluster the local authority areas of Armagh, Banbridge, Craigavon and Newry and Mourne Councils have come together to formulate a Peace & Reconciliation Action Plan for the Southern Area cluster and to establish a Southern PEACE III Partnership.  Newry and Mourne District Council are the lead Council within the Southern Cluster.
